How to Buy Zcash (ZEC)
Buying Zcash is straightforward on several regulated platforms. The more important step is what you do afterward: move ZEC into a wallet that supports shielded transactions if privacy is part of why you want Zcash.

Step 1 — Choose a place to buy
Most people buy ZEC on a regulated exchange that supports Zcash deposits and withdrawals. One long-running option in the U.S. is Gemini, which has supported Zcash for years (including shielded withdrawals in supported cases).

- Create an account and complete any required identity verification
- Deposit fiat (bank transfer, etc.) according to the platform’s instructions
- Buy ZEC at the market or limit price you prefer
Other exchanges may also list ZEC. Compare fees, withdrawal options, and whether they support modern Zcash address types before you commit large amounts.
Step 2 — Decide where you will hold it
Leaving coins on an exchange is convenient for trading, but it is not self-custody. For everyday private use, many people move ZEC to a personal wallet.
- Software wallet — good for spending and learning (see Zcash wallets)
- Hardware wallet — useful as a second layer for larger balances (browse Ledger devices)

Step 3 — Withdraw to your own wallet
When you withdraw:
- Copy the receive address from your wallet (not from a screenshot someone sent you)
- Prefer a shielded or unified address when the exchange and wallet both support it
- Send a small test amount first
- Wait for confirmations, then send the rest if the test arrives correctly
Step 4 — Use it (optional paths)
Once ZEC is in your wallet you can:
- Spend Zcash via gift cards, retail networks, or direct merchants where available
- Hold for later
- Earn more ZEC exposure through everyday fiat spending with a rewards card such as the Gemini Zcash Edition card (eligibility required)
Common mistakes to avoid
- Sending to the wrong network or a mistyped address
- Skipping the test transaction
- Storing large amounts only on an exchange long-term without a plan
- Downloading wallet apps from unofficial stores or ads
